Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative condition resulting in tremors, stiffness, and slowness of movement. It primarily affects older individuals although can be seen in young adults as well. It was named after Dr Joseph Parkinson who first described the clinical presentation in 1817 and affects over 1.5 million individuals in the US. The pathology involves breakdown of cells that produce a neurotransmitter called Dopamine. As a result several therapeutic treatments are available to replace Dopamine, and to keep it from being broken down with excellent results. Yet the condition can lead to functional impairments overtime affecting one’s gait and balance. There is now hope for improved quality of life with a novel rehabilitation program called “ BIG . “ This program is appropriate for all stages of PD.

LSVT BIG is a research-based exercise approach developed to increase flexibility, improve balance, and increase walking speed.

LSVT Treatment Consists of 16 Therapy sessions, 4 consecutive weeks, individual 1hour sessions, daily homework.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic condition that affects the central nervous system (CNS): the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The damage caused by multiple sclerosis creates scars, called lesions, that can be seen on the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve. Because the process of developing these lesions is called sclerosis, multiple sclerosis literally means “many scars.” These scars lead to a variety of neurological problems.

The team at NeuroRecovery has developed a multi disciplinary approach to the treatment of multiple sclerosis, offering occupational, physical, speech and counseling services in our comprehensive care center beginning with our newly diagnosed clinic. The staff of NeuroRecovery are certified MS Clinical Specialists with extensive knowledge and numerous treatment approaches to manage the symptoms experienced in multiple sclerosis.

ALS

The ALS Association- Alabama Chapter, in partnership with Alabama Neurology Associates in Birmingham, Alabama is excited to offer a comprehensive ALS Care Clinic for our Alabama patients and their families. The ALS Care Clinic every month at the office of Alabama Neurology Associates on 3105 Independence Drive, Suite 105, Birmingham, AL 35209.

We are very proud to offer multidisciplinary treatment, supportive care and information to help manage the effects of the disease on people with ALS. The ALS team consists of a Neurologist, a Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathologist, Respiratory Therapist, Licensed Social Worker and the ALS Association Patient Services Coordinator. Our extended team includes Pulmonologist, Gastroenterologist, Licensed Professional Counselor and Psychologist available upon referral.

ALS manifests itself differently for each person. This makes it difficulty for medical professionals to predict prognosis with accuracy. Therefore, the goal of the ALS Care Clinic is to help you and your family live with ALS as independently as possible for as long as possible. One of the biggest challenges facing those with ALS is that sometimes you may be asked to make difficult decisions about treatments or equipment before the need seems to be great enough. The professionals can recognize when change is needed and may indicate you need to adapt strategies to “stay ahead of the curve”. We prefer to think of this strategy as maximizing independence to stay in control of your life rather than “giving in to ALS”. The important point to remember is that you are in control regarding decisions about your healthcare. We are here to share the treatment options, problem solve on ways to maximize independence and introduce resources available so that you may make informed decisions.
